Horseshoe Crab Festival

Community members gathered on May 18th 2025 at Broad Channel American Park for the Annual Horseshoe Crab Festival, hosted by JBRPC, the American Littoral Society, NYC Bird Alliance, NYC Parks, and the National Park Service. Attendees had the chance to witness horseshoe crabs—“living fossils”—on the shoreline and learn about their vital role in coastal ecosystems and modern medicine.

Baby Barn Owls were spotted near Big John’s Pond in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York. This location, part of the larger Jamaica Bay ecosystem, provides an ideal sanctuary for diverse bird species, including these young owls, due to its protected wetlands and abundant resources.
